How may tax-free POV’ (privately owned vehicle) may I register ?

Each sponsor can buy two tax exempt vehicles during his tour (3 years)

How many POV’s (tax paid) may I register ?
As many as you want, on the condition that they are in Belgium.
CAUTION: The vehicles considered part of your “household goods” imported from a third nation (non EU) can’t be sold within the 12 month of the registration in Shape plate.

In who’s name must I register these tax free POV’s?
ALL tax free POV’s are to be registered in the sponsors name. The sponsor is the holder of the Shape ID card ending at *****00. This has as consequence that ALL the paperwork (bill of sale, insurance, etc) has to be in the sponsor’s name.
Dependants who are properly registered in Belgium may register a tax paid POV in their name under the BELGIAN system (not Shape).

What if the car tax paid belongs to my husband/wife and I (as sponsor) wants to register it ?
Then you will have to make a transfer of ownership (bill of sale) and go to Control Technique (CT) (not always).

In what time frame do I need to register my POV(s) ?
Within 7 (seven) days upon arrival in Belgium, even for those you want to keep in your garage and never use it.

What is the registration fee at SHAPE ?

The registration fee is €35.00 for vehicles and trailers of more than 750 Kg. This price includes the fiscal stamp, a copy of the (official) rear plate and a document folder. If you would like to have a front plate, there will be an extra charge of €10.

What kind of POV’s can I buy tax free ?
You can only by sedan’s, Station Wagon’s and motorcycles tax free. For all other kinds of vehicles (especially Pick-up ) seek advice from the RO before buying one. Trucks,Van’s,Caravans, Mobil Homes, trailers, camper, boats and planes are NEVER tax exempted. In this case you’ll have to pay the TVA.

Does a motorcycle count as a POV ?
YES

I own a VAT exempted car before coming to SHAPE, will that car be taken into account ?
YES, if you own it for less than 6 months before your arrival in Belgium.
NO. With few exceptions - If you own it for more than 6 months before arrival in Belgium ask the clerk of Central Processing Branch-Registration Section (CEP-RGN) to make it part of your “household goods” by providing him the information proving that.

What is my benefit to do so?
If the car is considered part of your “household goods” than it is considered as “All tax paid” and will have a “blank” registration. In this case it will not be taken into account for your quota of tax free vehicles and you are able to buy another tax free POV at any time.
CAUTION: The vehicles considered part of your “household goods” imported from a third nation (non EU) can’t be sold within the 12 month of the registration in Shape plate.

What is a “blanco” registration ?
A “blanco” registration means that your car is considered (for the Belgian Ministry of Finance) as ALL tax paid. No T1 or T2 on your registration document.
CAUTION: The vehicles considered part of your “household goods” imported from a third nation (non EU) cannot be sold within the 12 months of the registration in SHAPE plate.

What is T1 registration ?
A T1 registration means that this POV is considered (by the Belgian Ministry of Finance) as tax free. In this case import duties (10 %) and the V.A.T./T.V.A. has not been paid. These vehicles are bought outside the European Union (EU) or in the EU, in a custom warehouse. Be aware that in case of sale of this vehicle on the Belgian market, you’ll have to pay the importation tax and the V.A.T./T.V.A.

What is a T2 registration ?
A T2 registration means that this POV is considered (by the Belgian Ministry of Finance) as tax free. In this case only the V.A.T./T.V.A. has not been paid. These vehicles are bought in the European Union (EU). Be aware that in case of sale of this vehicle on the Belgian market, you’ll have to pay the V.A.T./T.V.A.

What is a EU form 1510 (fifteen ten) ?
This is a document which grants tax exemption when you want to buy an item in the EU, free of value added tax (V.A.T./T.V.A.).

What is an Annex II?
This is a customs form for merchandise from outside the EU.

What do I need to do to de-register my car?
You ALWAYS need to go to customs office (bldg 210, rm 112) to have your vehicle “regularised”.

A. In case of end of your tour of duty (TOD) :
You hand in the plates (particularly the rear one) to the Central Processing Branch-Registration Section (CEP-RGN) and a copy of the documents stating that you are leaving Shape. In case you need the rear plates to return home or for shipping the car, you may return them later by mail.

B. Not at the end of your TOD:
You will have to provide proof that that car does no longer belong to you (bill of sale, copy of the new registration in any country, shipping documents, etc) and return the plates (particularly the rear one) to the Central Processing Branch-Registration Section (CEP-RGN).
