WELCOME 2 SHAPE!!

Dear newcomer,

You and your family will arrive or have already arrived at an exciting destination and you are sure to find working and living here an enriching and rewarding experience, side-by-side with people from 28 NATO members and 23 partner nations.
Living in an international environment and being in contact with moral, spiritual and intellectual values so diverse and rich is a unique opportunity. We encourage you to make new friends with your co-workers and neighbours as you settle in to your new home. SHAPE friendships tend to last for life.
SHAPE is located
in the heart of Europe, so you will also have the opportunity to travel and experience the diverse cultures of your host nation and its' neighbour nations.
Arriving in a new country brings a lot of questions: How is Belgium? How different is it compared to my country? How are the people? What is life like there? What kind of administrative formalities need to be filled?
Our website, ‘
SHAPE2DAY’, contains useful information intended to facilitate your integration in the SHAPE community. Let’s start with some important pages that will give you essential information about things you should know before you arrive:

    • In-processing – registering your family, registering your car, finding a house, dealing with V.A.T./T.V.A., customs and/or Police matters in Belgium, setting up telephone services and more
    • Education – facilities for you and your children
    • Healthcare – facilities that are offered to you and your dependents
In order to help you familiarizing with your new environment, ‘Newcomers Orientation’ briefings are organized during the year: in March/April, in July, in September and in November/December.
The first day of the programme is mandatory for new SHAPE members (military or civilian members). Their families are encouraged to also attend this first day session which takes place in the SHAPE Club, from 0900 to 1300 hours, and is divided into two parts:
  •  The first part is structured to help newcomers to become accustomed with their new environment and to living in Belgium.
  • The second part of the day is designed to help ease the official matter of settling in, and provide information about arrival procedures, housing, medical facilities, etc.

The second day is free and optional - and is highly recommended for the whole family. This guided tour will help you become familiarized with the city of Mons. Departure will be at the SHAPE Event Centre (bldg 303) at 0930 hours and return to the same place at 1330 hours.

Visitors in the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Waudru in Mons

The tour begins with a visit of 'Les Grands Prés', which is the nearest mall in the Mons area. Newcomers are welcomed by the Manager of the Belgacom boutique where coffee, tea and biscuits are offered and welcome packages are distributed; including gifts and coupons offered by the shopkeepers of Les Grands Prés.
The tour will include a guided visit in the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Waudru, a jewel of Gothic architecture built from 1449 to 1686.
The tour continues with a walk through the pedestrian streets of Mons to the Grand-Place, where everyone will have the opportunity to caress the head of the well-known ‘lucky-charm' monkey.
The tour ends at the Town Hall in Mons, 'Hôtel de Ville', with a reception hosted by a representative from the city of Mons, and the distribution of welcome packages with gifts and coupons offered by the shopkeepers of Mons before returning back to SHAPE.
Once again, we welcome you to SHAPE and wish you a productive and rewarding time with us.
